What exactly is Metaverse?

Metaverse is a fictional and virtual universe where people can shop, interact, and even do

business through their virtual “avatars”. In short, Metaverse is a virtual-reality “world” where

avatars have a “life”. Imagine this… You have your own personal avatar (inside metaverse)

where you can buy things, have a job, and even fall in love all from the comfort of your sofa!

Metaverse uses technologies like augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), artificial

intelligence (AI), and even blockchain technology. In the coming future, the

metaverse may take many forms like gaming, online communities, and even business meetings! Metaverse is also

known as the “3D internet”... It is actually like the internet, but instead of “browsing” it — we

“live” it.

 Fun Fact: Facebook changed its name to “Meta” in 2021 because the company wishes to focus

more on the new technology. Meta has already invested more than $10 billion dollars in the

industry of metaverse.

Metaverse may sound crazy and even a little scary…

Is Metaverse a “dangerous” technology?

Like any technology, the metaverse also has its “dangerous” sides… Identity theft may be one of

the most dangerous risks of the metaverse. This is because not only our personal information

like name, credit card number, and bank account details will be easier to hack or “steal” but

also our biometrical data (like eye pupil or body movements)! 

Physical threats are also a very dangerous aspect of this new technology… For example, an

an attacker can simply hack into the user's VR headset and change the physical boundaries, causing

them to fall down the stairs in the “real world” instead of walking ahead in the “virtual world”.

Cyberbullying, abuse, and even harassment also play a massive risk when it comes to the

metaverse. 

What impact will it have on the future?

The metaverse has the possibility to change the way we interact, shop online, learn and even

work. Metaverse may even change the entertainment industry. Imagine having infinite

concerts to go to with amazing special effects! What we know for sure is that the metaverse

will come and cause at least some changes in our lives. Some countries like UAE and South

Korea is already implementing metaverse in their governments.

In conclusion, when applying for necessary actions and protection, the metaverse isn’t a

“dangerous” technology (even though some parts need more attention and security). If used

correctly, it can actually help us and our world. The only thing left for us to do is sit back and

watch the metaverse grow…
